Synopsis
Ari Folman’s Waltz with Bashir is a gripping animated documentary about the 1982 Lebanon War. As Folman interviews the soldiers he served with in the war, he tries to piece together what really happened during the massacre at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps, and to uncover his own lost memories of his service in the war.
After Bashir Gemayel, the President of Lebanon, was murdered, his following of Christian militia soldiers called Phalangists were overcome with rage and a need for revenge. Since they suspected Palestinian factions were responsible for Bashir’s murder, the Phalangists invaded the Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps. Aided by the IDF’s illumination rounds, the Christian militia brutally killed the refugees there, even though virtually no Palestinian combat fighters remained in the camps.
Although it may not have been the Israeli soldiers themselves who pulled the triggers, Ari Folman is determined to find out who knew what was going on and who had the power to stop it from happening.
