Savyon Liebrecht
Biography
Savyon Liebrecht is most widely recognized for her short stories, which depict contemporary Israeli life. Born in Munich, Germany to Holocaust survivors, Liebrecht and her family immigrated to Israel after the creation ofthe Jewish state. Her experiences as an immigrant, as a child of survivors, and as a citizen of a new state, have helped shape her work.
Liebrecht studied philosophy and literature at Tel Aviv University and continued her studies of journalism in London. Upon her return, Liebrecht published her first short story in 1986. Since, she has published six collections of short stories and novellas and two novels. Harsh realities of modern Israeli life are recurring themes in the writer’s work: the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, between religious and non-religious Jews, and the effects of the Holocaust on the children and grandchildren of survivors.
Liebrecht is also the writer of three plays and several television scripts and currently lives in Holon, Israel.
