Biography

Shira Richter-artist, activist, mother-a trinity of roles which are inextricably linked, each one informing and inflecting the other. However, when it comes to Richter's photographic works, the aesthetic experience is given priority. As an artist-activist, Richter has a nuanced understanding of the power of images and their ability to conduct complex issues through linguistic and cultural barriers.

Richter's experience as a film maker gave her valuable insight into "talking" to the audience. Thus her works break through the conceptual boundary that can often separate the art world from world reality, to illuminate international social issues concerning women and in particular, motherhood.

Richter's oeuvre involves a re-education of perception, where the everyday is re-contextualized as art to bring about a fresh perspective on naturalized aspects of socio-political order. Richter's art has often been used by institutions, doctors, and activists to deliver their message more effectively. Similarly, Richter has lectured at conferences in Canada, Britain, India, Turkey, Cuba and Germany
