Biography

Avishai Finkelstein’s photography showcases his life-long love affair with the city of Tel Aviv in all its guises. Images reveal the romance of the city, as well as its grittiness; its present-day counterculture, as well as its architecturally-revered past; its moments of energy, as well as of isolation; its fashion, as well as its flaws. It is Finkelstein’s interest in relationships – sometimes harmonious, sometimes contrasting – that informs his work, prompting him to explore the lines and borders that exist between various factions of society, divisions in religion, and public and private spaces.

Without passing judgment, either in regards to the events of a shadowy nightclub or the city’s places of decay, Finkelstein photographs commercial gloss and the gritty irreverent with the same amount of interest and respect, crafting a tangible bond with his subjects that imbues them with a startling immediacy and vitality. Finkelstein’s vast range of work includes black and white portraits, moody documentary shots of life on the streets of Tel Aviv, studies of Bauhaus architecture, and portrayals of the Hassidic world. Using only a digital camera and available light, Finkelstein allows spectators insight into the Tel Aviv milieu, allowing them to explore the dynamic aesthetics of the city’s lifestyle.
